Praying Through Our Trials, Tests and Temptations

The final sermon in our Lenten series on the Lord’s Prayer takes up that most troubling of petitions, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” The deeper one walks into life in Christ the more relevant this prayer, rightly understood, becomes. It was C. S. Lewis in his little book Letters to Malcom: Chiefly on Prayer who noted the word peirasmos, sometimes translated “temptation” ‘means “trying circumstances” of every kind.’ This sets the stage for a right understanding of what our Lord is teaching us about the life of prayer in this world “with devils filled” that threatens to undo us. He who himself faced a life that swirled with trials, tests and temptations is more than sufficient for us in this way of the discipleship.
