Follow Your Heart

We often hear or speak the sage advice to follow your heart; but what does that really mean? I've been asked, "How do I know my heart won't lead me wrong?" The question suggests that a little clarification is in order. We are not always speaking of the same thing when we are speaking of the heart. We use the heart metaphor for too many meanings. So let's clarify which heart it is that will NEVER lead you astray.

If you are speaking solely of your desire when you are refering to your heart, that desire is genuine and is there to inspire you to pursue that which you are passionate about. Your passion or desire is a mechanism of spirit, mind and emotion that serves to motivate you to action. The enthusiasm of following your passion can create such exuberance that you move beyond what is most beneficial for you. That over-stimulation may occur rarely or not at all; but it is well to understand that the potential exists. By all means, follow your passion and allow enthusiasm to inspire you. Temper it with logic and intuition when you begin to feel like a snowball nearing the bottom of the hill. Desire is a tool of the heart; but it is not the heart itself.

We often refer to the feeling of love as the heart. The unconditional love for our fellow inhabitants of this incarnation, for God and Spirit is more than emotion. It is a state of being. Being at one with the universe is being in the state of divine love. Sacred adulation for creation and creator draws us to the space of heart wherein all are equal, venerated and cherished. This love is a condition of the heart that serves to remind us of our spiritual nature and to bring us into alignment with the flow of Divine presence. This heart state of being is an integral part of spiritual growth and development; but is is not the heart itself.

When we speak of following your heart in relation to living your life with Divine guidance with surety through inuition, this is the meaning of heart that will never fail you. I often refer to this as the "heart" that is "the seat of your soul." This is that deep inner Spirit that is the deepest awareness of your eternal being wherein only the unconditional love of Divine presence exists. It is this timeless dimension of Soul that you discover in deep meditaion, reverent prayer and the quiet calm of complete inner peace. This is the stillness of the soul from which wells up Divine wisdom. This is the heart that will never, ever lead you astray. Following the guidance of your eternal soul through intuition that springs from the quiet stillness in the deepest recesses of your Divine being will always illuminate the path of greatest value, meaning and importance.

Divine Perspective

In the depths of the heart of our soul is our interface with Divine Source. In the silence of the soul, the voice of Spirit speaks the language of Light. The Divine Light of awareness illuminates every aspect of our being from the outpouring of the heart. As we ponder, contemplate and meditate by quieting first the active mind, then the business of our physical embodiment, releasing thought, emotion and outward focus, we find in the quiet, still nothingness of our deepest awareness a connectedness to something softer, lighter, wiser and more filled with unconditional love than can be known in any other way in this incarnation. As we allow ourselves to experience this awareness from within, we receive a perspective beyond time and space, beyond physical and mortal, beyond three dimensions. This Divine perspective is the vision of an enlightened soul from the timelessness of eternity. Receiving Divine guidance through this omniscient perspective ensures an astounding aggregation of knowledge and discernment. As you allow divine guidance to lift you above the human perspective to a spiritual vista of greater dimension, the vision for your journey is revealed through panoramic view. You see, know and understand your journey, not just from a different perspective; but from the Divine perspective.

Map Your Journey

To map the journey of this lifetime we might begin with a timeline. We might mark the significant experiences of this lifetime, beginning from childhood, that shaped our lives. We might apply these important moments in time to the geographic locations in which they occurred or to which they related, marking them on a topographical map. The milestones or signposts of greatest significance would mark the path of the journey on the map.

Mapping our soul journey would be very different. The soul map is eternal and interdimensional. The path is Light itself. To map your soul journey you must first ask yourself what you know about your soul. Who are you really? What is this being that is you? Where did you come from, and where are you going? What are the most soul-stirring significant moments of awareness that touched you deeply and changed you forever? What great ingights have you received in this life? What do you know of life beyond this life? One way to begin mapping your soul journey is start with a journal.


 * Spiritual Practice: Soul Journey Map

Without giving thought to how to organize your soul mapping journal, just jot down all your deeply spiritual, inspirational and enlightened thoughts, experiences and ideas. Write phrases, paragraphs and pages, as you feel inspired. Compose pieces of poetry or prose that well up from your soul and add them to your journal. Take some time to contemplate significant events in your life and note what your soul inspires you to document about them in your journal. Your journal can be a box of bits of paper and napkins you have written on, a notebook or a tablet. It can be a series of emails, files or texts you have saved. It can be a blog, website or electronic library that catalogs your significant spiritual experiences. As it develops, the map will begin to take shape. The Light will form its path before you. Once you can see the Light of the path, you can follow it through its eternal journey.

Practice mapping your soul journey. Meditate in the quiet stillness of your soul to know and understand with depth and clarity how each marker on you soul's path is layers of milestone in many lifetimes on many timelines and through many dimensions with significance on many levels. There is much more to know about your soul map than where you came from and where you are going. Every signpost is a junction of interdimensional implication with more to know, discern and understand. Be open to greater awareness at every juncture. Reflect with openness to more complete understanding on past and future events. Follow the path of Light mapped by your Soul journey.
